NYC Marathon

I woke up at around 4 am on Sunday. I was tired. It was kind of cold. The clocks had changed. (Had they changed!?! I hope they changed!) I could hear the wind. (Freaking wind!) I took a quick shower to wake up and get a little warm. I needed to be at Central Park South by 6 am to catch the bus. The bus to Staten Island!

Walking through Times Square was so weird at 5 am. There were runners going in all different directions to get get their transportation to the start. I was told that it didn't matter which bus I got on so I hoped on the bus in front of me and in about 15 minutes we started to move. I fell asleep on the bus for a few minutes and before I knew it we were on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge! We got off the bus just after 7 am and I made my way through security and found the charity village. Once there we were met with strong winds. We stayed as warm as possible while waiting for our waves to be called. I was in wave 4. I wasn't starting the marathon until 10:55 am. The 4 hours actually went by pretty quickly. Suddenly our wave was called. I made my way to the green corral and lined up by the letter D.
Party wave!!!!

All the sudden the beginning of the marathons was happening! The first 2 miles were on the bridge. I was on the lower level of the bridge which blocked the GPS signal to my watch. I wasn't too concerned with it except I couldn't quite use my pace bracelet. The wind on the bridge was CRAZY! I was literally getting pushed towards the median!

Start line!
Fort Wadsworth with Manhattan in the back!

Once off the bridge we were in Brooklyn. (I happen to love Brooklyn and was excited to run through it!) I took everything in while running and just appreciated everyone who was out there supporting the runners. I tried to find a friend around mile 8, but didn't see him.

I remember mile 8 a little too well. I was really feeling it at that point. I think that I just hadn't eaten enough while I was waiting, but who knows. My pace was dropping and hard. I knew that I could only do my best and kept pushing through. I was excited when I got to the Queensboro Bridge because I knew that I was going to finish. Nate also surprised me at the end of the bridge. I wasn't expecting to see him out on the course so I was excited. I remember telling him I just wanted to be done and that everything was hurting. First Ave seemed like forever. It is a straight shot and you can just see for miles. This made it hard to keep positive and moving in general.

When I got back into Manhattan I got my groove back. I was able to keep a better pace and up with my intervals. I can remember seeing Central Park in the distance and feeling like it took forever to get there.
Once I got into the park it was a wonderful feeling of knowing I was going to be done soon!

Soon I could see the finish line. Then I saw the tracking map and ran over it. When I looked up at the finish banner I saw it change to "Thank You, Charity Runners!" It seemed fitting for sure. I checked the app and saw that I finished in 6:05:57.

You are so welcome!
I walked up got my medal and started to cry. Why did I cry? I was happy. I was happy to be done. I was happy to have made it. I was happy that the hardest thing I've ever done was over. I was happy to get out of the wind and cold. (I didn't know that it would take me over an hour to get back to the hotel. Who decided all of this walking pre- and post-race was worth it!?!) I was crying out of relief. I just needed to cry. Then I cried because I couldn't get my bottle of water open. Then the flip top didn't open enough and that really pushed me from annoyed to pissed. I could have just grabbed water off of my belt, but I'm too stubborn for that. Finally I got my finishers poncho and it was the best thing ever! It is so warm! (I can wear it now that I'm home on the reg right?)

I'm not sleeping. I'm just laying, in a poncho.
There were 50, 564 finishers.
And I was one of them!

It hit me today (which is Wednesday the 5th) that I finished the NYC Marathon. Did I finish? Yes. Did I finish in under 6 hours? No, but the wind was a wench so I can let that go. Maybe one day I'll complete a marathon in 5:30 (which was my goal pace). Honestly I'm fine never doing a marathon again. Given the opportunity, sure I'll do it.

As of right now at 8 pm on Wednesday November 5 I have raised $3,685 for Children's Hospital! There is a few more donations coming through so I should have at least $3,700! I can't believe I got that much money for such a wonderful cause! If you didn't get an opportunity to donate or would like to donate again you can do so right here!

It's Almost Time!

Tomorrow I leave for New York City.

I'm excited. I'm scared. I'm excited. I'm freaking out!

I admitted last night that this was the scariest thing I was going to do. Forget running Dopey in January, I am freaking out about 1 race! ("It's a televised event! It makes sense you're scared!" Words from a friend.)

Wednesday night we had our team dinner. It was Maggiano's in Boston. It was really good. I got to hear a little bit more about the NYC Marathon and talk about Disney!

I am packed to go.
I have my pick up info, my charity band to get into the area on Staten Island, my singlet.
I'm as ready as I'll ever be.
Now I need the rest of me to understand that too.

2 days from now I will be running through one of the best cities in the world!

While relaxing last night on Facebook, I saw a post from the Devil's Chase 6.66 Miler that caught my eye. I was going to sign up for this race this year, but for no reason at all I didn't sign up. Next years race is being held ON HALLOWEEN! They had a special price until midnight tonight tonight (Halloween) to pay $30 for the entry. Of course I signed up, but an even crazier sign up happened when Carrick signed up! He has one year to start running. I'm so excited for him! Looks like we'll be spending another Halloween up in Salem!

Meanwhile for the rest of 2014 I still have to sign up for a Thanksgiving Day run. I'm looking at one in Hingham or maybe I'll just end up in Plymouth again! Not 100% sure still, but I need to figure it out and then get Nate moving. (And also convince him that he will not die during a 3 mile run!)

I did get my cousin to sign up for a 5k in December in Newburyport. (I have to convince her that she'll be fine too. What is with the people I know!?!) The event is called Ladies Night Out. Throughout the year there are a few of these runs on the North Shore and in New Hampshire. This is a ladies only run and a few of my team mates from TNT will also be there. We're going to have fun and I said she could have my wine. (Not drinking will let you give that away!)

I have a few last minute things to do before leaving tomorrow, but I'm going to enjoy my Halloween. It is my favorite holiday after all!
It's just a bunch of hocus pocus!

Week 12 Training Recap

Week 12 involved absolutely no running. I know what do I mean no running!?! I caught the cold that was going around and took the time to get better. I still got in almost 15 miles (probably over because I was still at work moving around without tracking my steps) of walking in during the week. I'm still kind of feeling the cold lingering, but I feel so much better this week. I just got back from a 3 mile run which felt great. (Besides the pain in my right knee, it was great.) I'm behind in my long runs for NY, but I'm going to do whatever I can do to keep myself injury and sickness free. If I do that, I can do a marathon.

This Saturday is the Zooma Run Cape Cod. I feel like I signed up forever ago! (It was actually about 3 months ago.) This run came up fast. I'm looking forward to getting my butt out there and doing my best. (As much as I'd love to PR, doing my best and having fun needs to be #1!)

We also have a great fundraiser happening on Saturday that my sister is putting on in memory of my dad's friend who passed away last year. There will be a poker run and raffles with all donations going to Boston's Children Hospital. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone after I run and raising money for a great hospital.

I'm also giving away a $20 Starbucks gift card for every $5 donation I receive until the end of Friday night!

If you would like to donate, but can not attend the fundraiser you can do so here.

Weekly Recap 8/4-8/10 & Race Recap

First let's look at this past week.

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 17 minutes of yoga
Wednesday: 4.04 miles
Thursday: 30 minutes of yoga
Friday: 4 miles
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Bobby Doyle Summer Classic (5.05 miles), Walk 2 miles

This week kind of sucked. I tried to do some yoga on Tuesday to break away from life for an hour, but I barely got through 17 minutes. I couldn't shake the crappy mood I was in. I should have had a longer run, but I didn't want to overdo it with a race on Sunday. Plus with tax-free weekend coming up I know I'm going to be tired. This will definitely be a long week and hard to keep up my runs during. I'm just taking this one day at a time. I know that life gets in the way sometimes and that will have to be okay.

On Sunday I participated in the Bobby Doyle Summer Classic. I've never been to Narragansett, RI before, so this gave me an opportunity to see the town. I picked up my bib there about 20 minutes to the start of the race. I also received a pint glass which was given out to the first 100 registered runners (I think). I didn't think that I was one of them, but I did receive one. This was a 5 mile run so ideally I wanted to be done before an hour. And I should have. I've been having some GI issues before runs lately and can't figure out what is going on. I haven't changed anything that I've been eating or anything like that so who knows. At around 3.5 miles I started to feel sick. I couldn't wait to be finished with the run, but knew it was only 1.5 miles until I was done and could go be sick in a bathroom. (Yes a real bathroom! The school was open to register, get your bibs, and use real bathrooms!) I lasted a mile before I did get sick. That added a few minutes to my time. I did finish in 1:00:18. I got my medal and a cup of water before using the bathroom one more time. I didn't take any post-race snacks or anything. I did bring a few things with me and had them in the car for the ride home. Overall I really enjoyed this race. There are very fast people out there and I can't imagine running that fast for a block forget miles. All the volunteers were very nice and always shouted out a great job. (Or in my case "I like your tattoo".)

Now I just have to get through tax free than I can focus on the Zooma Half next month.

I'm still raising money for Boston Children's Hospital too. If you can donate you can do so here. Any amount can help and goes directly to the hospital. Plus we all love tax write-offs!

A Challenge and an Update!

Let me start with a recap of my week, then we'll get into my runs today.

Monday: 4 mile run, 20 min yoga
Tuesday: 15 min legs with 3 lb weights, 1 hour yoga
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: 4.13 miles
Friday: 15 min of core, .5 mile walk, dancing
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: 17.2 mile run

On Friday night I went to into Boston to see Katy Perry. This is my 3rd time seeing her, so I was obviously excited to see her again. There have been lots of reviews for the Prismatic Tour and I haven't seen one bad word about the show. She plays her hits and some stuff off the new album. There were different sections of the show, each with their own theme. You couldn't get bored watching it with so many set and costume changes. I think the Cat-oure section was my favorite. If you know Katy Perry, you know she loves cats and always incorporates them into her show.

The Hyper Neon section was great too. It had a 90s vibe and she wore a green wig. This is when she played her single "Birthday" and balloons fell all over the audience. They chose a fan from the audience to go up on stage if their birthday was in the month that the show was.
Fan brought up for "Birthday".
She got carried by balloons as well.

She ended with "Firework" which is always amazing to see. And yes, there were fireworks.

Today I got up early and drove up to Rockport, MA for the Triple Threat Challenge. At 9 am I started with 1 mile run. I was back for about 10 minutes before the 5k started at 9:20. I had 15 minutes before the start of the half at 10:15. This left me with no time to use the bathroom (the lines were a little long with such a short time in between runs). My right knee started giving me a little issue during the 5k so I used some BioFreeze on it while I waited for the start of the half. My legs were definitely feeling it at this point. I hadn't trained for this long of a run as of now so I knew it wasn't going to be perfect. The course had hills, which I was expecting. Just after the turn around point in Gloucester, there was a hill from hell. I swear it was so steep I was angry. At one point during the run I had to tell myself to stop being so hard on myself and just do my best. I was just tired and in pain. Luckily I pulled myself out of it. It was hard for me to find a good interval to run at, so I had to keep changing the pace. I was actually surprised with my finish time for the half. Here's the results:
1 Mile: 9:47
5k: 34:56
Half: 2:45:36
Total: 3:28:04

The race was really good. I enjoyed the views along the way.

The volunteers along the course were wonderful. Everyone was happy and cheered us along. We may have not had as much support from spectators, but there were a lot of people who came out from their homes to cheer us on which was nice. Considering I was there all day I did notice that before I finished that the sponsors were already packed up and leaving. This was kind of disappointing that people in the back of the pack didn't receive all the same things that the faster runners did. The course was still open for a least 30 more minutes if not more when I finished. There has been a lot of people speaking out about how slower runners miss out on things. This was the first time that I have personally experienced it.

CJ goes in to get surgery on his ear again tomorrow. As of today I've raised $1,235 for Children's Hospital. All money raised goes directly to the hospital to help kids like CJ. If you would like to donate you can do so here.

4 Weeks Down...

...14 more weeks to go. I felt like I was getting through the weeks really quick, but 14 weeks is still a lot of weeks. I've started 5 weeks today and feel better about it. Last week wasn't really great. I was feeling sick on and off most of the week and missed my long run. I know these things can happen, but it's still hard to not beat myself up over. I'm trying to be positive. This week will be better and longer (more on that later).

Let's take a look at last week:

Monday: 2.71 miles
Tuesday: Rest
Wednesday: Sequence 1 of the Tracy Anderson Method
Thursday: Rest
Friday: 3.03 miles, 5 minute yoga, & .5 mile walk
Saturday: Rest (Sick all day)
Sunday: 3 mile walk

I'm hoping that this week I'll be feeling much better. So far today seems good. I got out for my run and finished with some yoga.

This week will be a little more challenging. I signed up for a race that I'm not fully trained for, but then again I've never been fully trained for anything I feel like. So on Sunday morning I will be driving up to Rockport, MA for the Yukan Run TripleThreat Half Marathon Challenge! The races start at 9 am. Yes I said races. This is how the morning will look:

9 am: 1 mile
9:20 am: 5k
10:15 am: Half Marathon

Extra for running all 3 races!

If you do all 3 you are completing the TripleThreat Challenge. Of course I signed up for that. (I'm losing my mind!) Regardless of which race/races you do you receive a tech-race shirt. If you complete the half marathon you also receive a medal. Of course if you complete all 3 you receive a beach cooler as well. I'm excited to go to the North Shore to run. I don't usually go anywhere north of Boston. I've never been to this area either so I'll be using this experience as a sightseeing time as well.

The following weekend I will be going south to Narragansett, RI to run. (I've never been to this part of Rhode Island either. I must be going for the ocean views!) I'll be running in the Bobby Doyle Summer Classic. This is a 5 mile run which will also include ocean views for part of the race. You do receive a tech-race shirt and a medal for finishing the race.

Not only am I excited for seeing new places that are pretty close to home, but I'm also excited that I've reached 30% of my fundraising goal so far! I've set a new goal of reach 50% by September 6th. I know there's been a lot of stories going around right now about children who are sick. As someone who has seen these people first hand at Children's Hospital, my heart breaks even more for them.

CJ's first opening day!
I know that most people who are in my life today know CJ as a happy kid who is always running around. And that is how we see him now too. My family also remembers him being in the hospital. It is awful to think this is how we spent months, but CJ is stronger because of it. (No really, wait until he hits you or throws something at you.) We have pictures that we don't really show people hidden way on the computer. I hate that anyone has to go through this. I know that it is hard to think about good things that happen to us sometimes, but we should all try. It can be something small even. (Like that woman who held the door for you.)

I'm running for every single child and every single family who has to go through hard times with their children. I may not be a mother, but I do feel for you. If you can donate any amount to the hospital please do so here: Nicole's Fundraising Page.

Week Two Check-In

Week 2 of marathon training has finished. I feel like I've been training a lot more than 2 weeks, but maybe because I was running a race up until 1 week before training started. This is how this week looked:

Monday: XT (walking)
Tuesday: 1.54 miles
Wednesday: XT (walked in Boston)
Thursday: 2.03 miles
Friday: 30 minutes of yoga
Saturday: 3.1 miles & 10 minutes of yoga
Sunday: XT (walk along the beach)

On Wednesday I went on a whale watch with my boyfriend. We saw a ton of whales and had a beautiful day in Boston. We also went to the New England Aquarium before walked a little bit in Boston.
It was a great day off.

On Sunday I took a walk in Falmouth with him again. It was a nice beach walk while the sun was starting to go down.

One of the beautiful views you can find down the Cape.

I've officially hit the $1,000 mark on my fundraising this week too. To donate to this wonderful hospital you can do so here. Remember no donation is too small.

Fundraising & Other Things

I kind of disappeared. Then I showed up for a minute. Then I hid again. I'm getting silly!

An update of my TNT fundraising & training.

Let's start with the fundraising. I'm 72% to the goal! This is awesome. I have a little over a month to raise the rest. I have a Thirty-One Bags party coming up. If you have never heard of this before, they sell bags (surprise!) & storage solutions. My sister had a party last year & uses one of her bags for a diaper bag. It's the first one that didn't break on her. (What is she putting in there!!!!) If anyone would like to order anything & have 20% of the profits go to TNT please use the following link!

Thirty-One Bags Fundraiser

You can also donate directly to my fundraising efforts here:

No donation is too small!!!

I guess we can discuss my physical training...or lack of. Between the storms bringing the snow, how disgustingly cold it has been, and work I don't have it in me. Since I got back from Disney I think I've ran/walked a total of 6 miles. (Remember I've been back for over a month and a half.) It's discouraging. I'm feeling crappy about it. I wish my heart would tell me otherwise. (Or when it's above 20 degrees I wasn't working.)

What do you do when you're just not feeling it?

Something Exciting To Share!

With kick-off just around the corner for my season with TNT, we are starting to get emails about different things. When I saw the email at work, I didn't have too much time to read it so I just read it within the last 30 minutes. It is nice to read little check-ins from different people every now and then. One of the major things I noticed in the list was a little mention of the top 3 fundraisers. With the help of you all I am number 2! As of this afternoon I hit $1,373 with the help of Phil! We are $102 from hitting the half way mark! I'd love to reach that by New Year's Day!

This is a first! I've never been in the top 3!
We also got to meet our honored hero! The honored hero is who the team will run for as a whole. I'm excited to share that with you all. Her name is Tracy. She's 27. That's just 2 years older than me & she is going through more than anyone ever should. She will be spending her New Year's getting transplants, while the rest of us are already hating our resolutions. You can check out her story below.

Tracy

Remember there is still time to donate & have a tax deduction for this year. Any amount can help people like Tracy. If you can't think of what to get someone for Christmas, donating to a charity in their honor is a great idea! If you would like to donate directly to me you can do so through this link:

Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder?

I've been a little distant. Working in retail during the holiday season will do that to ya. Plus I can't access a blog post on my iPad.

I did a long run last Monday. I know why haven't I done one since then? I haven't been off of work since then. I'll be back out there on Thursday before helping a friend paint around his house. Okay back to Monday. I ran 10.1 miles. It was long, but not close to the 26.2 I need to accomplish in a month. (AHHHHHHHH!) I went to Wompatuck State Park in Hingham, MA. You can do a lot in there. I ran for myself, not for a time, not for a distance, but just for me. There was some running on trails which slowed me down. I also brought my camera along with me. Running in Disney means taking photos, so I might as well try it out. I kept around a 14 minute pace which is fine with me. A muscle has been taking a toll on me. It's annoying & I hate it. That run was the first time running with my Bondi Band. I wrote about these in my last post (or 2 posts ago). Growing my hair out is annoying. It's not long enough to pull back, but its not short enough to leave alone. I pulled my hair back, put it on, & ran. I didn't have to keep adjusting it. It stayed put. It was great. I was definitely a giant plus. Even when I took it off after the run my hair looked okay enough to go into the post office.

The print of my Bondi Band.

I have some Bondi Bands still for sale as a fundraiser for TNT if you are interested. I have the pink with white polka dots, the plain aqua, the purple print, the black with the pink tiara, the pink that says "Powered by Pixie Dust", & the black one that says "Mirror mirror on the wall who's the fastest of them all".

By donating $10, you can receive one band.
By donating $16, you can receive two bands.

To get a band for yourself just donate to my fundraising page:

In the comments you can let me know that it is for the Bondi Band fundraiser.

Hopefully by my next post I'll have much more to share with everyone.

The Week That Was Nothing

So I haven't run since my last post. Yeah I know. I'm feeling a little discouraged. Okay, a lot discouraged. I don't know if I'll be able to do this marathon. I'm kind of stressed about it. I'm feeling nervous about raising money all over again too. I mean I've raised over 40% in a little over a month. Being hard on myself again.

In other news I started to fundraise with Bondi Bands. If you never heard of a Bondi Band its okay I hadn't either until the first time I went to Disney for Marathon Weekend. It's a wicking headband. The ladies love them! (Lady runners that is!) They can also act as ear warmers. (Stand outside at 4 am waiting for the start of a race. It's cold!) I've sold 4 so far & I have someone else wanting to buy 2. I'm going to buy one also. (Yes I will donate to myself!) So make that 7, no 8 I have being taken. One more I have for someone else! I've done pretty well on that now that I think of it. :-) There might be another order going through soon. :-)

Tomorrow I'm going to force myself to run. It will be in the 50s so I think I can do it. Hopefully I get myself together!

This will be my cheer up for this week.

Animals make everyday better!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is about being thankful for what you have, the people in your life, and helping others. Or about planning your Black Friday chaos for the next morning. I do not think any sale is worth sitting in the cold for 6 hours and risking your own life. (Sorry Mom!) This year it did seem pretty straight forward. By the time I woke up everyone was home and done with their shopping. So back to Thanksgiving.

For the half with TNT I made a goal to raise at least $1,000 by December 1. On November 1, with the help of 2 friends, I hit $1,025! I was really thankful for everyone who had donated so far. I still have a ways to go with fundraising, but I'm feeling much better about it.

I started my Thanksgiving at 5 am getting ready to run with Sean & Stan. Sean picked me up at 6 & we began our journey to Plymouth. After an experience at Dunkin Donuts, we got on the highway & soon we were in Plymouth. The 3 of us did something called the Second Helping Challenge. We did a 4.77 mile run throughout downtown Plymouth first then moved to the Pinehills for a 5k. It was fun. Even those hills downtown was an experience. We all finished. We all got medals. We even all placed in our age groups! (Sean coming in 3rd!)

After the Turkey Trot. We just have another 5k to do. No big deal.

From Plymouth I headed home to shower & change for "dinner". This year my uncle & his husband came home from NYC so we went out to eat. It was good. We all got turkey. (No surprise there!) Then we went back to my grandmother's house to eat more dessert. Yum! After watching too much Family Feud & Cash Cab we went off to the movies. We saw Lincoln. It was really good. It's long so make sure you don't eat too much turkey & haven't been up since 5 am without a nap first.

Being Black Friday, I'm off to work now! Remember to be nice to the sales people & other shoppers. No deal is worth being treating others poorly.

A Run Meet-up & A Football Game

A few weeks ago I met with my TNT campaign coordinator, Whitney, before work. We were meeting to talk about fundraising & just to getting to know each other. She had mentioned that the Team going to Disney for Marathon Weekend were holding a run meet-up in Lexington for the grand re-opening of the Greater Boston Running Company (or GBRC for short). So I checked my work schedule & saw that I had the day off so I said that I would go. I go in my car at 6:15 am & drove about an hour to Lexington. I was nervous getting there because I had never done a meet-up before, but figured it was a good way to get to know other people who were going to Disney in January, as well as other TNT members. I ended up running with 2 women who were going to Disney. One was doing the Goofy Challenge & the other was doing the half. For those reading this & saying "What the heck is the Goofy Challenge!?!" let me explain. On Saturday these runners get up hours before the sun to run the half marathon. The next day they do it again to run the full marathon! You get a special medal for doing both. You can also spot these people out of a crowd. They are limping & in pain, but smiling the whole time. They will usually wear all 3 medals the rest of Sunday so you can hear them before you see them. (FYI-the medals are not light. I've read that wearing them is worse then the pain from running!)

Look at those medals!

Anyways one woman & I did 6 miles so we split off from the woman doing the Goofy Challenge & headed by to the GBRC. It was really nice to run with someone (which I normally do not do) & talk about whatever we wanted. In the end, we did 6.22 miles. For the first time ever I ran 2.5 miles without stopping. The longest I ever did was 2 miles & said never again. (I'm a big promoter of the run/walk method.)

After I left Lexington I was then en route to meet my friend Chris for the Harvard-Yale football game.

If you know me personally, you know I'm not a football fan. I actually hate it. So this was a strange day for me all around. I parked at the Cambridgeside Galleria & took the train to Harvard. (I also can't parallel park, so I need a parking garage to get me through. Especially when weekend pricing is $3.99!)  I met up with Chris & we walked throughout Harvard before heading over to the game. After eating a hot dog (which was better than we could ever imagine and way cheaper than anywhere else!) we went to sit down. I critiqued most of the stuff that doesn't matter too much. (Like how Harvard cheerleaders kind of suck. Sorry!) We left before the end of the game to get some late lunch/early dinner & to beat the crowd out. Harvard did beat Yale. (Go team!) We ended up taking silly pictures in Harvard.

Chris & I in front of the John Harvard statue.

We may have went into a classroom & wrote on the chalkboard (there may or may not be pictures of this.) Before leaving Harvard Square we made our way to Pinkberry. We then went our separate ways to our homes. I was exhausted by the end of it & had a long day at work the next day.

I guess the next time I write it'll be about Thanksgiving & the Second Helping Challenge.

Stay tuned!
